LIVING SACRIFICE

It was perhaps inevitable that the underground black metal movement would produce a Christian musical response, with the musical style much the same but the lyrics concerned with good over evil, sometimes referred to as "white metal." Living Sacrifice are one such band, formed in 1989 in Little Rock, Arkansas with a lineup of bassist/vocalist D.J., guitarists Bruce Fitzhugh and Jason Truby, and drummer Lance Garvin. The band recorded a self-titled debut for the REX imprint; two others followed with Bruce replacing D.J. before the label went bankrupt. Living Sacrifice then signed with the Solid State division of Tooth & Nail, which released their 1997 album Reborn, in addition to reissuing the group's previous recordings. The Hammering Process was issued three years late, which also included new additions to the band: Rocky Gray on guitar, Arthur Green on bass, and Matt Putnam on percussion.
